In this video, we will take a closer look at an engineering process called turning. We are going to be using a roughing single point cutting tool on a plastic material which has a cylindrical shape. We are going to be using a plastic work-piece instead of a metal one since in this case, it is easier to observe the effects of turning on the material. The cutting tool is placed and fastened onto part of the lathe called a toolpost. The work-piece is put into a self-centering three-jaw chuck and is fastened with the use of a chuck key. The key is inserted into the chuck and rotated in order to tighten each individual jaw and fix the work-piece in place. The movement of the tool is controlled with the use of the lathe's gear mechanism called apron. The tool is moved towards the work-piece until it starts cutting it. Then, it is slowly moved to the side in order to remove a layer of the material. The tool is able to cut the material while moving in the opposite direction as well. The material is being slowly removed in the form of swarf and falls down from the work-piece. Then, it is caught in the swarf tray located under the lathe. After we finish turning, we dispose of the accumulated swarf.
